Build Credit From Scratch: No Credit Card Required

Everyone says "get a credit card to build credit." But what if you can't get approved? Here's how I went from no credit to a 720 score without one.
When I was 22, I had zero credit. Not bad credit - literally no credit history. Every credit card rejected me because I had no credit to prove I'd pay them back. Classic catch-22.
So I built credit without a credit card. It took longer, but it worked. Here's exactly what I did.
Step one: Become an authorized user on someone else's card. My mom added me to her oldest card (that she uses responsibly). Her good history became part of my history. My score went from nothing to 630 in two months just from this.
Important: make sure their account has a good payment history. If they're late or maxed out, that hurts you too. And get removed if they start using the card irresponsibly.
Step two: Credit builder loan. My credit union offered one. I "borrowed" $1,000 that they held in a savings account. I paid $90/month for 12 months. They reported payments to all three bureaus. At the end, I got my $1,000 back minus a small fee.
Basically I paid $80 to build credit history. Worth every penny because it gave me 12 months of perfect payment history.
Step three: Rent and utilities reporting. Most landlords don't report rent, but services like Rental Kharma will report your rent payments to credit bureaus. Cost me $8/month but added 2 years of payment history retroactively.
Experian Boost is free and adds utility bills to your Experian report. Doesn't work for all three bureaus, but it's something. Added my phone and internet bills, got a 13-point boost.
Step four: Student loans count. If you have student loans, they're building (or hurting) your credit every month. Pay on time, even if it's just the minimum. That payment history matters.
Took me about 18 months to get from no credit to a 720 score using this method. No credit card until month 14 when I finally qualified for a secured card. Used it for gas only, paid it off every month.
Now I have great credit and multiple credit cards. But I didn't need them to start. You can build credit the slow, boring, safe way. It works.
