Free Entertainment: 40 Things That Actually Don't Cost Money

March 2, 2024

Cutting entertainment from your budget doesn't mean sitting at home staring at walls. Here's what we actually do for free (and enjoy).

When we were paying off debt, we cut our entertainment budget to basically zero. Thought we'd be miserable. Turns out there's a ton of free stuff we just never considered.

Library. Okay, obvious, but seriously - our library has way more than books. Free movies, video games, museum passes, craft kits, toys you can check out, classes, activities for kids. We go twice a week.

Parks and trails. We live near 4 different parks. Playground for kids, walking trails for us, all free. Started doing "park tour Saturdays" where we try a different park each week.

Free museum days. Most museums have one free day per month. We hit 8 different museums last year without paying admission once. You have to check schedules and plan ahead, but totally worth it.

Community events. Our city does free concerts in summer, movies in the park, festivals, farmers market entertainment. I signed up for the city newsletter and now I know what's happening.

Game nights at home. Bought a deck of cards for $3 two years ago. Still using it. Kids love card games. We also do board game nights with games we already own.

YouTube workouts. Cancelled our gym membership ($90/month for both of us). Do YouTube fitness videos at home. Free, convenient, and honestly? I work out more now.

Nature stuff. Hiking, beach trips, fishing, bird watching. Kids love outdoor adventures and it costs gas money only. Pack snacks and water, make it an all-day thing.

Free online courses. Coursera, Khan Academy, YouTube tutorials. I've learned photography, basic Spanish, and cooking techniques. All free. All useful.

Potluck dinners with friends. Instead of expensive restaurants, we rotate hosting. Everyone brings a dish. Social time without the $200 bill.

More ideas: volunteering together, sunrise/sunset watching, stargazing, free podcast listening while walking, window shopping (no buying), people watching at the mall, attending free church events even if you're not religious.

The trick is PLANNING. Free stuff requires more planning than just swiping your card. But when your alternative is sitting home being bored or going into debt for entertainment? Planning is worth it.
